Week 13 (June 8th-12th)

Dear 2nd Graders,

 

Use this last week to hand in any missed assignments or explore some of the programs we’ve used. You might also enjoy this google doodle that allows you to make music with visual effects: google doodle music.

Week 12 (June 1st-5th)

 

Dear 2nd Graders,

I loved listening to your grooves! Please watch below for one more lesson with Groove Pizza:

 

  1. In Groove Pizza make one slow song and one fast song.
  2. Choose different drum kits for each song by clicking on the drumset in the middle of the circle.

Week 11 (May 26th-29th)

Dear 2nd Graders,

 

Thank you for your Mario Paint songs! I loved hearing the percussion pieces and your own original ideas. This week for music:

 

1. Watch the video tutorial to see how to use Groove Pizza, an online drum machine.

2. Play with the program and have fun! 

3. Copy and paste the web address at the top to share your song with me

 

 

Week 10 (May 18th-22nd)

 

Dear Second Graders,

I’m so glad you had fun playing with Mario Paint! I have one more lesson for you to do with the program this week:

 

  1. Make two different songs on Mario Paint
    1. Make one song using only percussion sounds (remember, percussion sounds are instruments that you hit to make a sound - drums, xylophones, even a piano is a percussion instrument!)
    2. Make the second song any way you like
  2. If you want to share your song with me:
    1. Copy the link by clicking on “save/load” at the bottom of the screen. Then, click on “publish to a shareable URL” and then “copy link.” Paste the link into an email to me. OR
    2. Take a screenshot of your original composition and send it to [email protected]

Week 9 (May 11th-15th)

Dear 2nd Graders,

I loved reading about your interviews and the differences between the music you like and the music your grandparents and special friends used to listen to! I hope everyone is having a great week. 

 

For music this week, watch the video for instructions and read on below:

  1. Experiment with Mario Paint and make your own song! Use the pictures at the top to make different sounds.
  2. Answer these questions: 
    • What happens when you put one of the pictures on the highest part of the staff?
    • What about on the lowest?
    • What kind of sound does the cupcake make?
  1. If you want to share your song with me:

Week 8 (May 4th-8th)

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

 

I hope you’re all doing well! Second graders, great work on the Magic Flute unit. I loved reading your thoughts and looking at your drawings. 

 

This week, you’ll be interviewing a grandparent or a special friend and finding out about the music they listened to when they were your age. Here are the instructions:

 

  1. Contact your grandparent or special friend and interview them using the questions provided here: Interview a grandparent music lesson.pdf Please note that there are two pages. Feel free to use this as a guide and also come up with some of your own questions!
  2. Listen to your grandparent or special friend’s favorite song. How is it different from or the same as the music you listen to?
  3. What did you learn about your grandparent or special friend that surprised or inspired you?
  4. Send the answers from the interview guide questions to [email protected]

Week 5 (April 13th-17th)

I hope you are all safe and well. Second graders, I loved looking at your listening journals and the pictures you drew! Here are this week’s music assignments:

3. Write down the answers to these questions in your listening journal:

  1. Who is your favorite character so far? (Tamino - the prince, Papageno - the bird catcher, Three dark-haired ladies, The Queen of the Night)

Week 4 (April 6th-10th)

Dear Second Grade Families, 

I hope you are all safe and well. Second graders, I loved looking at your listening journals and reading about the interesting sounds you heard last week! Here are this week’s music assignments:

  1. Watch the video for this week’s music lesson and listen to the story: The Magic Flute - intro and overture (2nd Grade Week 4) 
  2. Listen to The Magic Flute Overture.mp3 and do two things in your listening journal:
    1. Draw a picture of what the music makes you think of or something you remember from the story so far
    2. Write down all of the instruments that you recognize
  3. Send me a picture of your listening journal! [email protected] 

 

 

Week 3 (March 30th-April 3rd)

  1. Play the video for your child.
  2. Second graders: Find 4 different sounds inside or outside your home and write them down inside your listening journal. Write down if they are ff (fortissimo) f (forte) mf (mezzo forte) mp (mezzo piano) p (piano) or pp (pianissimo). If you want, you can draw a picture of each sound. 
  3. Listen to your favorite song and fill out the Listening Reflection Worksheet (below).
  4. Send me a photo of your listening journal!
