### Unit 9 (BIM Math) - Multiply Fractions and Whole Numbers

Chapter 9 - Multiply Fractions and Whole Numbers

In this chapter, your student is learning how to multiply whole numbers and fractions. The lessons build upon prior knowledge your student has about unit fractions and mixed numbers, as well as the Distributive and the Associative Properties. Area models will help your student visualize multiplication with fractions.

Your student can practice multiplying whole numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers when you are working on a household project, such as installing carpet or cooking with a recipe.

• While planning and measuring for a household renovation, such as installing carpet, tile, or wallpaper, ask your student to measure the dimensions to the nearest fraction of a unit. Then use an area model to find the area of the room or wall. Challenge your student to calculate the total cost of the project.
• While cooking with a recipe, talk with your student about how you can rewrite the recipe to make 3 times the serving size. Ask, “How will the amount of each ingredient change?” Deepen the discussion by asking how to rewrite the recipe to make times the serving size, or  of the serving size. Your student will understand how multiplying whole numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers is used in everyday life.

By the end of this chapter, your student should feel confident with the learning targets and success criteria. Encourage your student to think of other contexts in which multiplying whole numbers and fractions is used.

Have a great time completing household projects and cooking!
