Art Show

The fifteenth annual group exhibition of works by students attending Rhinebeck Central School District will be hosted by Starr Library again this year beginning May 1. Entitled, “Unstoppable Creativity, the show will be presented digitally due to the pandemic and safety precautions. The public is invited to join faculty and students at a virtual reception on Friday, May 7 from 5- 5:30pm when the presentation will be viewed via zoom for communal viewing.

The exhibit will feature work in a variety of media used in students' art classes and show the expertise students gain as they study art within Rhinebeck Central Schools’ arts curricula under the direction of art teachers Fawn Johnson (CLS), Jennifer Famiglietti (BMS), Kathryn Giles and Cynthia Baer (HS).

This year most upper level art classes have been flipped, meaning students learn key concepts on the days they are in class and final projects are done independently at home. At the elementary level, art has been brought into the classroom with Art on A Cart, with many projects aligning to the subject being taught within each classroom. While the works reflect the students’ proficiency in using mixed media, drawing (pencil or charcoal), pastel, and acrylic painting, the art is also a reflection of the way our students have been coping and living in a strained world. Visual expression, problem-solving, ingenuity and free-thinking are all positive skills students have exercised in this learning environment this year. Their demonstration of being “Unstoppable” is visually present in students’ work.

The artwork also reflects other themes and interests of the individual students. Some themes reflect local and/or distant outdoor life, others show a student’s self-awareness, while others substantiate the student’s interest in particular media. This exhibit provides a spectrum of creative experiences Rhinebeck Central School students in grades K through 12 were exposed to this year despite the teaching ang learning obstacles inherent in teaching art remotely.

The show will be shown through Starr Library throughout the month of May at www.starrlibrary.org The library is located at 68 W. Market St., Rhinebeck, NY  12572. For more information, call 845.876.4030.
