RCSD Provides School Closure Updates Re: School Breakfast and Lunch, Building Access, and Access to Technology
Thank you for your patience with the current County-mandated school closures in an effort to address the spread of the coronavirus infection in our area. We have been working tirelessly to prioritize and address the many related issues, some of which are outlined below, as follows:
School Breakfast and Lunch: Effective Tuesday morning, March 17, 2020, the Rhinebeck school district will be providing free student breakfast and lunch from Mondays to Fridays, on school days while schools are closed under the Dutchess County State of Emergency Declaration. These meals are available for the Rhinebeck school students in those families requesting them. The meals are available to ALL Rhinebeck students, and NO payment is required.
In order to participate, we request that parents email the number of meals needed by 7:00 pm the evening before (but no later than 7:00 am the day of pickup) to the following email address: [email protected] In your message, please include the number of meals requested and the names of those students needing meals.
Meal pickup for all students (CLS, BMS, and RHS) will be on a “grab and go” basis between the hours of 8:00 am and 10:30 am at Bulkeley Middle School/Rhinebeck High School in the student parking lot drop-off lane.
Breakfast will consist of cereal, milk, fruit and juice. Lunch will consist of a selection of a turkey, cheese, or peanut butter & jelly sandwich, salad boat, fruit and milk. Please be ready to request your sandwich choice when you arrive for pick up or include your choice in your message if you are requesting delivery. Please let us know if your child has any food allergies.
If pick-up is not possible, please include that information in your email, including the delivery location. While we can’t guarantee delivery at this point, we will make every effort to provide delivery of those student meals, depending on the demand and the number of volunteers.
Building Access: A number of parents and staff have asked about access to our school buildings during the current school closure period to retrieve student items that are needed but were left here when school was dismissed this past Friday afternoon.
To accommodate that request, but being mindful of the potential for exposure to the coronavirus by visitors, we will open each of our two school buildings tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17, 2020, from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm, to those students, parents, and staff who have a need to retrieve their items. We will consider the possibility of additional building openings for retrieval of items, on an as-needed basis, in consideration of maintaining social distance and flattening the COVID-19 curve.
Individuals who have travelled internationally within the past 14 days or who had close contact with anyone who had, and/or who have the coronavirus symptoms of fever, cough, and trouble breathing, are asked NOT to visit our schools tomorrow for the retrieval of school items or any other reason. Visitors to our school buildings for that purpose will be asked to request to be admitted at the main entrance, will register after being admitted (assuming the caveat above), will retrieve their items directly and quickly, will maintain a safe and ample social distance from others, and will sign-out and exit the building through the main entrance.
Access to Technology: As we work with our teachers on how best to provide student access to materials that can assist our students to review, reinforce, and enrich their instruction, we are aware that many, though not all, students/families have access to the technology that may be able to support that access. As a result, we are in the process of making arrangements to loan mobile devices to students, and staff, on an as-needed basis. More information regarding sign-up for a mobile device will be forthcoming.
Related to that topic, we have been made aware that Spectrum is offering free broadband and wifi for 60 days to households in its service area with K-12 and/or college students. We’re told that installation fees will be waived for new student households. To inquire or enroll, call (844) 488-8395. While we are not endorsing this service, you might want to see the link below and consider whether or not it might assist your households, if you have an interest.
Thank you again for your ongoing understanding, and for your patience and support, as we work through these challenges and conditions that change daily, sometimes hourly.
