The Alice T. Daly Chapter of the National Honor Society welcomed 42 Rhinebeck High School juniors at an induction ceremony Jan. 8.

“I’m very happy to be in it. It’s a great accomplishment,” said junior inductee Drew Cuyler, a three-sport student-athlete and member of the high school Spanish Club. “I know colleges like to see you are in the National Honor Society, and you are putting in the work with school and extracurricular activities. It’s a good boost.”

The 42 juniors will join the 25 seniors in Rhinebeck’s National Honor Society.

“The Class of 2027 has a lot of new inductees, which I think is really cool,” said junior Ella Romeo, president of the junior class and co-captain of the varsity girls basketball team. “I’m excited to be a part of it and it’s a privilege to be a part of something like this. I think it’s a good step into college and to my next chapter of life, so I’m excited about that.

The induction ceremony featured the lighting of the candles symbolizing the five pillars of the organization – scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship. High school teacher aide Patricia Euell was the guest speaker.

High school seniors who are in the National Honor Society inducted the juniors.

“I think we do some fun meaningful work and seeing that the junior class is so interested is really nice. I think that the society and the chapter will be in good hands once we graduate,” said senior Beatrice Macdonald, vice president of Rhinebeck’s National Honor Society.

Bobbie Bie, Rhinebeck’s adviser for the National Honor Society, said the junior inductees will be required to do two service projects before the end of the school year. One of those projects will be making Valentine’s Day cards for veterans through the office of a Congressman, something the chapter will be doing for a fourth year.

“I think people look back at their service during their tenure as NHS members as something rewarding,” said Bie.
