Personal Electronic Device Policy

📱 Student Use of Phones & Electronic Devices: What You Need to Know

The district understands that many students have phones, smartwatches, and other personal devices. However, to support a safe and focused learning environment, there are clear rules about when and how these devices can be used in school.

🚫 When Are Devices Not Allowed?

Students may not use personal internet-connected devices, including smartphones, watches, and gaming systems during the school day. This includes:

  • Class time
  • Lunch and recess
  • Study hall and passing periods
  • Anywhere on school grounds during the day

This rule applies to all students unless an exception is granted.

📍 Where Devices Must Be Stored

  • Elementary School: Students are asked not to bring devices. If they do, they must be off and stored in cubbies or in backpacks all day.
  • Middle School: Devices must be turned off and locked in supervised lockers.
  • High School: Devices must be turned off and kept in individual pouches. Pouches will be provided to students. More information about the procedures will be sent by the HS Administrators.

✅ When Are Devices Allowed?

Students may use personal devices only if:

  • Required in an IEP or 504 Plan
  • Needed for a documented medical reason that requires a device
  • As directed or authorized by a school official
  • In an emergency

Requests for these exceptions must go through the school principal and include documentation if needed.

📞 How to Communicate During the Day

Parents/guardians should call the school office if they need to reach their child during school hours.

Students should not text or call home directly from personal devices during the day.

For all non-emergency communications, class will not be interrupted.

Students will have access to phones in the main office, or nurses office in order to call home.

🧾 What Happens if a Student Uses a Device When They Shouldn't?

  • The device will be taken and kept in the school office until the end of the day
  • On the first offense, the student picks it up at the end of the day and parents are notified.
  • Repeated misuse may lead to the device being stored in the office every day for a period of time.

Important: The school is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen personal devices.

🧪 Devices & Testing

During state tests and exams:

  • Students may not bring phones or devices into the testing room.
  • If they do, they won't be allowed to take the test unless they hand them in.
  • Students with special testing accommodations may be allowed device use as stated in their plans.

🧑‍⚖️ Discipline

Breaking this policy won’t result in suspension by itself, but students could face other consequences like detention, daily device storage in the  main office, or loss of extracurricular privileges—especially if the use also breaks other school rules, or if there is a repeated failure to comply with policy and directives from administrators.

🔍 Transparency

Each year, starting in 2026, the district will publish a report about how this policy is enforced to ensure fairness for all students.

🌐 Translations & Accessibility

The policy will be:

  • Posted clearly on the district's website
  • Translated into top non-English languages in the state, upon request
  • Included (summarized) in student and family handbooks

If you have questions or need help understanding how this policy affects your child, please contact your school principal.
