The 17th Annual Rhinebeck Central School District Art Show

At Starr Library

Artwork by Rhinebeck Central School District Students Kindergarten -12th Grade

May 1 – May 31, 2023

Opening Reception Tuesday, May 2, 4pm - 6pm

The art teachers from Rhinebeck Central School are pleased to present a group exhibition of works by students attending Rhinebeck Central School District. This is the 17th year the district show will be held. For the past 3 years, the exhibit was held in a virtual show format due to the Covid Pandemic, so it is with a lot of anticipation and excitement that this show is being put together.

This year, students from grades K through 12 will present a body of 2-D and 3-D work containing a variety of media used in their academic classes. The show highlights the work of art by students studying with Fawn Johnson (CLS), Jennifer Famiglietti (BMS), and Kathryn Giles and Cynthia Baer (RHS). The goal of the show is to not only to celebrate the expertise students gain as they study within Rhinebeck Central Schools’ arts curriculum but also to remind the public of the value art has in the public-school setting and the resilience of our children as they ponder and experience the world.

The exhibit includes both traditional and contemporary styles of work. While the artwork reflects students’ proficiency in using mixed media, pencil, charcoal, pastel, collage and assemblages, and acrylic painting, it also is representative of the themes and interests of the students. Some themes include local life, students’ self-awareness and inner feelings, while others concentrate on students’ understanding of balancing the elements and principles of art.

This exhibit provides a glimpse of creative experiences Rhinebeck Central School students in grades K through 12 encounters as they participate in Rhinebeck’s course offerings and learn about visual art through multiple media. Beginning at the Elementary level, grades K – 5, students are taught the basics or mark-making, hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and art-making through play. At the Middle School level, skills are scaffolded upon what was previously taught while media is expanded upon and a sense of responsibility and independence is emphasized as students work. Medias include clay, paint, stained glass, drawing medium, plaster, and printmaking. At the High School level, students can currently choose from eleven course offerings beginning with a choice of foundation courses of Studio Art, Studio in Crafts, Studio in Theater Design which satisfy NYS graduation credentials.  Advanced courses include Drawing & Painting, Graphic Design and Photography, Video Production, Drawing, Sculpture, Ceramics, Mixed Media & Printmaking, and Advanced Senior Studio.
