RHS STUDENTS NAMED TO AREA ALL-STATE

Three Rhinebeck High School band students were selected for Area All-State. The Rhinebeck students who will be representing the school at Area All-State are Isabel Carleton, trumpet; Aleks Holmes-Hunter, trumpet; and Jack Tellerday, french horn. These young musicians were selected from a pool of the best band students in NYSSMA Zone 10, which includes schools in Columbia, Dutchess, and Putnam Counties. Students accepted to the Area All-State band will work with a guest conductor, Keith Hodgson. They will rehearse and perform several pieces of music on Friday and Saturday, November 20 and 21, at Dover High School.

In addition, Isabel Carleton and Aleks Holmes-Hunter were accepted to the NYSBDA (New York State Band Directors Association) Symposium in Liverpool, NY. They will both be a part of the NYSBDA Honor Band at the Symposium. Only a few musicians in the state are selected every year to participate in the Symposium; over 350 students applied, and 117 were accepted. They will be at the conference from March 4-6, taking part in rehearsals and workshops. The Symposium concludes with a concert.

ENGLISH 11 FIELD TRIP TO OLANA STATE HISTORIC SITE

As part of a unit on the American Transcendentalists, on Friday, October 23rd, students enrolled in English 11 and/or Painting will visit the grounds of Olana, Frederic Church’s masterpiece of architecture and landscape design in nearby Hudson, NY.  Because it was created by a major figure of the Hudson River School in the birthplace of that artistic movement, the site offers an exceptional opportunity for students to see the manifestation of some of the key principles of 19th century aesthetics and philosophy.  Students will have been introduced to the tenets of Transcendentalism in the essays and poetry of Ralph Waldo Emerson, as well as excerpts from the writings of Henry David Thoreau.  On the day of the trip, Amy Hufnagel, Director of Education at Olana), will introduce the site to our students.  Her presentation will include historical background and even primary documents (Church’s own sketches for the landscape with text).  As the students hike the grounds, they can respond to several writing prompts that turn their attention to contrasts (high/low, light/dark, etc.) and “framing” views, as Church was keen to do.  Students can accompany their words with images or photographs.  The trip promises to be an enriching interdisciplinary experience for our students.

FIVE RHS STUDENTS COMMENDED IN THE 2016 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Five Rhinebeck High School students have been designated as Commended Students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are: Christopher Cassens, Theodore Gadsby, Gabriel Hammoud, Sarah Hanson, and, Elizabeth Kroll. A Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptionally academic promise. They are placed among the top five percent of more than 1.4 million students who entered the 20163 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“The young people named Commended Students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program are distinguished by their strong academic performance in this rigorous competition,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “Our nation’s pursuit of educational excellence can be furthered by publicly honoring these outstanding students and by acknowledging the important role schools play in fostering their development. We hope that this recognition will contribute to their educational opportunities and encourage all students to strive to realize their potential.”
