NYS Education Department Names RHS and BMS as 2015-16 "Reward" Schools

New York State Commissioner of Education Mary Ellen Elia recently identified Rhinebeck High School and Bulkeley Middle School as two of 365 high achieving and high progress Reward Schools among the 4,800 schools in the state. Of the 365 identified schools, 203 of them had also been identified as Reward Schools last year, and 155, including Rhinebeck High School, have now been identified for three consecutive years as Reward Schools. Bulkeley Middle School received this distinction for the first time this year. Chancellor Livingston Elementary School was recognized as a school “in Good Standing.”

Reward Schools are either schools that have high achievement or schools that have made the most progress in the state and do not have significant gaps in student achievement between subgroups. Rhinebeck High school was named a high achievement school.

To be identified as a Reward School, a school must:

In addition, high schools must have graduation rates above 80% to be a high achieving school and the percentage of students in the school who graduate with a Regents diploma with advanced designation or a Career and Technical Endorsement (CTE) must exceed the state average.  High schools must also demonstrate that their graduation rate for students who entered the school performing below proficient in ELA or math exceeds the state average. Elementary and middle schools must demonstrate that students are making annual growth in ELA and math that exceeds 50% and that the school’s lowest achieving students are also making gains that exceed 50%,
