Search Engines

The following are search engines you may use to research information on the web. Keep in mind that searching is not evaluating. You must evaluate each website you use for research.

Search Engines
Search engines use software called spiders or webcrawlers to search out and collect words from sites on the web. These words are placed in a database. When you use a search engine you are searching this database of words. Each search engine will return different sites for a specific search. You should use a variety of search engines to research.

Google

Alta Vista

AlltheWeb

Teoma

Meta Search Engines
Meta search engines search several search engines simultaneaously, but they cannot handle complex searches. Try a meta search engine if you are having a hard time finding information.

Dogpile

Metacrawler

Directories
Directories organize websites by catagories or subject. Directories contain very few websites in comparison to search engines because people must place each site in a catagory. This takes much longer than the way search engines find sites using spiders or web crawlers. Directories are best when browsing for information.
