When I was at my dads one time, we were making chicken for dinner and we went outside to get firewood. We heard some voices and we saw a car parked by our driveway. “Get the flashlight and turn off the stove. I nodded and ran inside. I picked up my dad’s heavy-duty flashlight and turned the stove off, grabbing a piece of yummy chicken from the pan. I went outside and saw my dad in the same spot I left him. “Here you go, I said, pressing the flashlight into his palm. We saw a man get out of the car and start talking. He was about 20-21 years old and he was wearing a black sweatshirt. My dad turned on the flashlight and looked at the man, quiet as a mime. The stranger started to sprint towards the college, disappearing behind trees from time to time. “Yo! Stop!” My dad cried, walking to the edge of the driveway, “It’s dangerous around here!” “I was just going to take a picture!” Shouted the man, stopping in his tracks “It’s too dangerous!” My dad said The man walked back over to his car, “Sorry about that” “Yeah…” my dad said, watching the car speed down the road “Picture eh?” I muttered under my breath, “Suuuure.” My dad smiled and walked back up to the chapel, “Lets go and eat.” I followed him and looked over my shoulder to the empty place where the car had been, “Of course he was going to take a picture. And of course, I’m the queen of Turkey” That was the first time I had experienced a failing vandal. But unfortunately, not all vandals have failed… Just two years ago on Halloween, was a break-in that didn’t fail. A group of kids broke into the college and trashed it. Under the influence of alcohol, they busted up walls, broke windows and even spray-painted various curses along with their names across the walls and stairs. My dad, the caretaker has done numerous things to keep the vandals away. Signs, alarms and even a big wooden stick. I’m surprised that the Mortgage Company, Institutional Investors hasn’t done anything to help. Perhaps that’s because the college is in such bad shape. The company is going to demolish it to put condominiums up. There has been numerous acts of vandalism over the years but it has gotten better since my dad has lived near there. Before my dad came, there were break-ins 3 or 4 times a week. Now, it’s about once or twice a year. That’s a pretty big difference. Another vandalism was done to the science building, another extension to the college, where all of the walls were “graffiti-ized” with sayings like ‘I am Superman’ and ‘I will save you in an hour’. I thought that these saying were really funny but still, it’s against the law. Vandals are nevertheless terrible and, well, stupid, but the Bennett College is in such bad shape I think the Mortgage Company just doesn’t care about it. They just want to sell it and get profit. $4 Million worth of history All in all, profiting off of history is horrible as well as the thought of vandals wreaking everything. History shouldn’t be for sale.
