Facts About Chancellor Livingston Elementary School

Welcome to Chancellor Livingston Elementary School, located in the historic village of Rhinebeck in Dutchess County, New York. Our school was built in 1967 and named after Robert R. Livingston, who was Chancellor of the State of New York, landlord of Clermont, and a diplomat.

Today our school has over 480 students in grades kindergarten through five. Chancellor is a school where students want to attend to learn. Our staff believes that every child will have an equal opportunity for a quality education and that all children can learn. The staff accepts the task of helping to develop responsible students. Besides our strong academic program we have many interesting opportunities to expand and extend student learning in the arts, in our after school activities, and through our enrichment program. Our children learn social skills to become responsible learners and participate in regular morning meetings as we build a community of learners at Chancellor Livingston Elementary School. Some CLS special school events in the past year included:

  • Artists and educators who taught folk dancing, songs, puppetry/sculpture, weaving, and Native American customs;
  • Successful fifth grade fund raising to sponsor the Whale Watch and wildlife exploration in Cape Cod and a visit to Plymouth, Massachusetts;
  •  A great annual Field Day for all grades;
  • Show Choir performances for community groups;
  • Classes working together with buddy classes on extra special projects;
  • Electives course options from cooking to dance, kayaking, roller hockey, making mosaics and much more;
  • Enrichment courses for CLS Yearbook and media, Mathematics, Physical Education, etc;
  • Field trips to take advantage of the historic and cultural events in the Hudson Valley;
  • Partnerships with local not-for-profit organizations that help foster growth and expansion of our curriculum

Parent Involvement

CLS parents are very active in the PTSO (Parent Teacher Student Organization). Our annual Fall Festival is a Saturday celebration in October filled with games, crafts, food and entertainment open to the entire community. Our PTSO coordinates the Book Fair, School Pictures and other special school events. The PTSO supports the Arts in Education Activities and Teacher Grant Programs. Hundreds of parent volunteer help in the school and classrooms in a variety of ways throughout the year.

Several parents participate in the CLS Building Level Planning Team (BLPT), a shared-decision making team made up of parents, teachers and the building principal. The CLS BLPT organized the Enrichment program, completed a homework study, supported school planners for grades 3-4-5, assisted in the implementation of full day kindergarten and other options for school program improvement, is responsible for the CLS Safety Plan, established the summer reading program, organized a Bus Driver Appreciation Breakfast, and helped in making the cafeteria menu a more healthy one. Most recently, we are working on a school-wide initiative to recognize positive behavior among our students, as well as implimenting a system for Peer Mediation which will allow our students and supporting staff to interact with each other in a positive way around conflict resolution.
